The Meaning of Act of Sleeping
Caught between life and death, the act of sleeping allows our mind and body to experience both worlds of life and death. The simultaneousness of being alive and dead, the magnified boundaries between life and death depicted in the pictures are reminders of <L’erotisme> of <Bataille>; one can taste a hint of death without having to die. While fascinated by the sumptuous beauty of human bodies in the pictures, we also become sympathetic to ourselves knowing that the sumptuous beauty is only immortal. The subjects in the pictures are not conscious of the audience. Their consciousness is already subconscious in the act of sleeping. I consider the act of sleeping as a mechanism for human beings to experience death. This special act provides human beings with opportunities to frequent life and death, real and surreal, and conscious and subconscious without any boundaries.
Human beings live in the nervous balance between Eros, the urge of life, and Thanatos, the urge of death. I wanted to communicate about life and death, conscious and subconscious, mind and body, and their paradoxical and antagonistic traits through the immortal beauty of human bodies.
